The Michael Okpara University, Umudike, Abia State has suspended indefinitely its ongoing academic activities following the protest by students against the increment of school fees in the early hours of Tuesday.
PUNCH Metro learnt from a statement by the Vice Chancellor of the school.
According to Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, that academic activities of the institution had been suspended indefinitely after the violent protest.
The statement read in part, “This is to notify the public that the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State woke up to experience the violation of the long-existing peace of the university this morning.
The protest by the students was in response to the increase in school fees. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, announced the indefinite suspension of academic activities to ensure the safety of students and university property.
The management also advised all students to leave the premises by 5:00 pm on Tuesday. Unfortunately, some miscreants joined the protest and caused damage to the school's properties, including an attack on the VC's official vehicle.
The Student Union Government General Secretary, Enyioma Godslove, appealed for peace, urging the protesting students to avoid violence. There were also reports of police presence on campus, with videos showing them dispersing the protesting students. It's unfortunate that these situations have been happening in other universities as well, with students expressing their concerns about increased tuition fees
