Olufemi Ajayi, a professor in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has issued a clarion call to the Federal Government to prioritize the revitalization of the nation's river basins. He emphasized that revamping these basins is crucial to promoting year-round farming, increasing agricultural production, and mitigating food inflation in Nigeria.
Ajayi lamented the neglect and abandonment of facilities at river basins across the country, citing this as a significant impediment to Nigeria's pursuit of food security. He stressed the urgent need for the government to reinvigorate these basins to facilitate continuous food production throughout the year.
Highlighting the imperative nature of the situation, Ajayi emphasized the importance of empowering, training, registering, and protecting farmers. He warned that Nigeria is facing an imminent food crisis, exacerbated by heavy reliance on food imports and the recent liberalization of the dollar, which will drive up the costs of both imports and domestic production.
Addressing insecurity in food-producing states is another critical aspect highlighted by Ajayi. He urged the government to prioritize the security of farmers, ensuring that they can work in peace without fear of attacks or disruptions to their livelihoods.
Furthermore, Ajayi emphasized the need for effective distribution channels to ensure that grains released from the nation's reserves reach every household. Mere release of reserves, he argued, will not suffice unless accompanied by measures to ensure equitable distribution and accessibility.
To tackle rising food inflation comprehensively, Ajayi advocated for a holistic approach involving engagement with experts, stakeholders, researchers, investors, and farmers. He urged the government to convene consultations to identify challenges within the agricultural sector and devise sustainable solutions.
As Nigeria grapples with the dual challenges of food insecurity and inflation, the urgent call to revitalize river basins and bolster agricultural productivity serves as a rallying cry for concerted action and collaboration between government and stakeholders. Only through collective efforts can Nigeria overcome its current agricultural woes and pave the way for a more food-secure future.
