"ICEHD and other organizations urge policymakers to prioritize gender inclusion in the agricultural value chain

ICEHD is urging policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize gender inclusion in agricultural budgeting and financial inclusion. This is to ensure sustainable climate justice for women farmers in Nigeria. They recently held a policy review and advocacy forum, discussing the project's outcomes and presenting an updated book.

According to Dr. Ndudi Bowei, the Project Manager, highlighted the gendered impact of climate change on women farmers, who play a crucial role in Nigeria's food security. ICEHD, with support from the African Women's Development Fund, launched a two-year project to empower rural women farmers with climate-smart agriculture skills, innovative farming technology, and improved access to markets and financing.

She also added that these changes bring a gendered impact, as it disproportionately affects women and widens gender inequalities. “Women, being the majority of the world’s poor and more dependent on natural resources, become more vulnerable than men to climate change impacts.”

Bowei explained that as climate change affects Nigeria, small scale women farmers count losses, because they play vital roles in agricultural production and are key to Nigeria’s food security.

Bowei said the book will serve as a policy advocacy tool to project the voices of rural women farmers, towards reforms in agricultural policy, gender mainstreaming in agricultural budgeting and financial inclusion to promote the women’s rights
