The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has issued a stern ultimatum to private airline operators in Nigeria, demanding accountability for the N4 billion allocated to them by the Federal Government to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The committee, led by Bamidele Salam of the Peoples Democratic Party, set a one-week deadline for airlines to provide evidence of how the funds were utilized or face refund obligations.
With over 56 ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) under investigation for alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 intervention funds, the committee expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency from airline operators during the investigative hearings.
Despite representations from industry stakeholders like Aero Contractors, Azman Airlines, and officials from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, lawmakers remained unconvinced by the explanations provided regarding fund utilization.
