In a display of unity, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has openly backed Aliko Dangote, Africa's wealthiest individual. Obi commended Dangote for his commitment to investing in Nigeria, especially amidst the current obstacles encountered by Dangote's refinery.
Speaking on Monday, Obi discussed the dispute involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, which Dangote claimed was impeding his refinery's activities. Dangote revealed that certain acquaintances had ridiculed his decision to establish his refinery in Nigeria due to the challenges he has faced.
In a heartfelt message posted on X, Obi expressed his admiration for Dangote's commitment to Nigeria's growth and development. He acknowledged the frustration voiced by Dangote but emphasized the importance of investing in the nation's future.
"My Dear Elder Brother, Alhaji Dangote, I want you to know that your friend is wrong. You did the right thing by investing in the productivity, growth, development, and progress of our beloved nation, through your many business ventures, irrespective of the challenges and obstacles that now stand in your way," Obi wrote.
He continued, "But God knows that you are strong enough to overcome the challenges and contribute to building a better humanity. I have lost more in my own life ever since I joined public service, which I would not have lost if I remained in the private sector."
Obi recounted his own experiences with similar challenges, including the loss of savings and businesses due to mismanagement and government harassment. Despite these setbacks, he remains committed to positive change and urged Dangote to stay resilient.
"I believe that God kept us for this, and has empowered us to bring positive change and shine the light on the dark areas of our nation. I encourage you to remain resilient in the face of the present challenges, not for material gains, but for the development and progress of the nation and a better humanity," Obi concluded.
