The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government are set to meet on Monday to discuss the demands of university teachers and prevent a potential strike.
ASUU recently issued a 21-day strike notice to the government, urging President Bola Tinubu's administration to resolve all outstanding issues hindering the progress of Nigerian universities.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the National President of ASUU, issued the notice during a press conference at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State. In an effort to avert the impending strike, Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, confirmed that government officials will engage with ASUU leadership on Monday.
The Minister made this announcement on Thursday during an appearance on the Beyond 100 days program broadcasted on TVC. He stated, "We have already notified ASUU's leadership for a meeting on Monday." The government has reviewed ASUU's letter and the longstanding issues, including the 2009 agreement, dating back to 1981.
The ongoing dialogue between ASUU and the government underscores the critical need for sustainable solutions to the challenges facing Nigerian universities. Both parties are expected to engage in meaningful discussions to find common ground and work towards improving the higher education sector in the country.
The Minister expressed optimism for constructive discussions on Monday to address all concerns affecting the university system.
