The Borno State Government has declared a two-week closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state, effective immediately, due to the ongoing flooding crisis. This closure, lasting until September 23, is aimed at ensuring the safety of students and staff.
The decision was prompted by the displacement of numerous residents by floods, leading to some schools being utilized as shelters. In one incident, displaced persons in Gwange Ward, Maiduguri, resisted government officials' attempts to evacuate a school being used as a shelter.
The Borno State Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation issued the directive, emphasizing strict compliance from all concerned parties.
The government expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and appreciated the understanding of the public. Additionally, in response to the flooding crisis, the Borno State Government has established a flood emergency response committee led by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijani.
In light of the flooding crisis in Borno State, the closure of schools serves as a proactive measure to prioritize the safety and well-being of students and staff during this challenging period.
The establishment of a dedicated flood emergency response committee underscores the government's commitment to addressing the immediate needs of affected residents and coordinating effective relief efforts.
