Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, has confirmed that he received the full support of former President Muhammadu Buhari before leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In an interview with BBC Hausa, El-Rufai stated that he informed Buhari of his decision to leave the APC during a personal visit. He emphasized that he consults with Buhari on all his matters, including his political decisions.

While El-Rufai acknowledged that he has other advisors, he identified Buhari as his "first godfather." He also stated that he supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite being surprised by some recent developments.

El-Rufai, who confirmed his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Monday, cited internal issues within the APC as a key reason for his departure. He stated that the party's leadership has shown no willingness to address concerns about the party's internal health.

He also explained his decision to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing concerns raised by Yoruba leaders about the political marginalization of Muslims in the Southwest and a commitment to zoning the presidency to the South in 2023.
