NAFDAC has seized three petrol tankers used for transporting edible vegetable oil in Lagos State. The oil in question was reportedly trans-loaded from an edible oil depot, raising concerns about potential health risks due to chemical contamination.

Upon discovering the situation, NAFDAC officials escorted the tankers to a processing facility in Sango-Ota for further examination. The crude soy oil was then handed over to the Southwest Zonal Office of NAFDAC for additional regulatory measures.

According to a NAFDAC official, credible information indicated that the tankers had been used to load both vegetable oil and petroleum products, with visible petrol and diesel tags on them. An investigation will be conducted to educate the suspects on the dangers associated with mixing petroleum products, which are known to be carcinogenic and unsafe for human consumption.

In response to this incident, NAFDAC Director General Moji Adeyeye has initiated a committee tasked with developing guidelines and a code of ethics for the marketing and distribution of edible vegetable oils in Nigeria. The agency has urged the public to report any suspicious or unwholesome practices related to food and regulated products to NAFDAC.

Emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding public health, NAFDAC reiterated its dedication to stringent enforcement and continuous surveillance to ensure the protection of public health and safety.
