The Enugu State Government has issued a stern warning to farmers and meat sellers, threatening to sanction anyone caught selling dead animals for human consumption. The alert follows a tipoff from whistleblowers alleging that animals that died of flu and other zoonotic diseases were being sold in meat markets.

In a joint statement, Health Commissioner Prof Ikechukwu Obi and Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Ubru strongly condemned the dangerous practice, highlighting the severe health risks linked to the consumption of meat from deceased animals. They stressed the potential transmission of zoonotic diseases from animals to humans through such consumption.

The government has mobilized its public health, veterinary, and local government disease surveillance units to probe the allegations. Health officials are actively inspecting livestock farms and slaughterhouses to monitor and address the situation effectively.

The commissioners categorically labeled the sale of dead animals as a grave offense, warning of potential epidemics and significant health impacts. They urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.

Enugu State authorities have pledged to swiftly prosecute individuals involved in selling dead animals for human consumption, underscoring their commitment to ensuring justice prevails in such cases.
