The police in Lagos, Akwa Ibom, and Edo states have announced the enforcement of the mandatory minimum requirement for Third-Party Motor Vehicle Insurance, effective February 1, 2025. This initiative is in compliance with a directive from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
In a statement, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin emphasized that vehicle owners in Lagos State must possess a valid minimum of third-party insurance. He urged those without any form of insurance to secure coverage immediately and warned vehicle owners and operators against non-compliance with this critical regulation.
Hundeyin stated that failure to comply will result in strict enforcement actions, including fines of ₦250,000 or both penalties. “This initiative aims to ensure vehicle owners adhere to stipulated insurance requirements to protect themselves and other road users,” he added.
This measure aims to protect not only the vehicle owners but also other road users by promoting responsible driving practices. The police have emphasized the importance of compliance and are prepared to take necessary actions against those who fail to meet the insurance requirements, reinforcing the commitment to safer roads across the states involved.
