SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE ADVOCATES FOR STANDARDIZED EXAMINATIONS AND CURRICULUM OVERHAUL IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has advocated for the implementation of standardized examinations across Nigerian universities, alongside a comprehensive revision of outdated curricula to better align with global realities and industry demands.

Speaking at the convocation lecture of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Abbas highlighted the inconsistencies in academic standards among universities. He argued that these inconsistencies have compromised the credibility of Nigerian degrees in the international job market.

"The time has come for all universities to adopt common examinations, particularly at the graduating level. There should be a unified examination for the various courses offered. This approach will allow us to assess whether the grades awarded by some universities genuinely reflect students' capabilities and whether they can withstand global scrutiny," he stated.

He further argued that the lack of standardized testing has led to disparities in academic rigor, making it challenging to fairly assess graduates' competence.

"A 2:1 in one university may equate to a third-class degree in another due to significant differences in grading systems. We need a common examination, especially at the graduating level, to ensure fairness and transparency in academic assessment," he added.
