A cybersecurity student, Roland Turaki, has testified in the trial of a cybercrime syndicate in Lagos, shedding light on his recruitment and experiences at Genting International Ltd, a company now under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Turaki revealed that he was recruited through a job advertisement for a customer service role offering a monthly salary of ₦250,000. He responded to the ad on an online marketplace and was directed to a WhatsApp group, where he received instructions to attend an interview.
Turaki described the work environment as highly controlled, with threats and strict monitoring by Chinese supervisors. He attempted to resign after realizing the fraudulent nature of the operation but was told he had to give 15 days' notice or forfeit his salary. Security at the company's premises was tight, with armed guards ensuring workers remained inside. Turaki's plan to leave was cut short when EFCC operatives raided the premises on December 10, barely three weeks after he had joined.
The EFCC has indicated its intention to tender Turaki's work desktop as evidence, along with the scripted formats he was trained to use. The trial has been adjourned to March 18 for further proceedings.
