Port Harcourt, Nigeria - Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has ordered the Heads of Local Government Administration to assume control of the 23 local government areas, effective immediately. This follows a Supreme Court ruling that nullified the previous local government elections.

The governor's directive, announced in a statewide broadcast on Sunday, comes in response to the Supreme Court judgment that also recognized the Martin Amaewhule-led 27 lawmakers as the authentic Rivers State House of Assembly.

Governor Fubara emphasized that the takeover is necessary due to the Supreme Court's outlawing of caretaker arrangements in local government administration across Nigeria. The outgoing local government chairmen have been instructed to formally hand over to the Heads of Local Government Administration by Monday, March 3, 2025.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) is expected to conduct fresh elections for the local government councils.
