Lagos State is intensifying efforts to combat prostate cancer, a significant health concern among Nigerian men.  The state is expanding screening programs, offering advanced treatment options, and launching public awareness campaigns to encourage early detection and improve outcomes.

Organizations like the PanAfrican Capital Foundation (PAC Foundation) are playing a key role in raising awareness. Their annual cancer awareness initiatives now include both breast and prostate cancer screenings.  In November 2018, the foundation provided free screenings to underserved communities, emphasizing the importance of early detection.

Mascot Healthcare's "Blue November" event, also held in November 2018, provided free prostate scans and medical exams for men aged 50 and above. The initiative aimed to encourage men to prioritize their health and seek early detection, a critical factor in improving survival rates.

Health experts emphasize that early detection is key.  Symptoms of prostate cancer can include erectile dysfunction, pain during ejaculation, and decreased semen volume.  In advanced stages, symptoms may include blood in urine or semen, pain in the lower back, hips, or thighs, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and leg swelling.

The increased focus on prostate cancer in Lagos State reflects the growing understanding of its impact and the importance of early intervention.

Reddington Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria, has made a significant advancement in prostate cancer treatment by performing the first Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy in sub-Saharan Africa. This minimally invasive procedure, offering benefits such as reduced blood loss, faster recovery, and improved cosmetic outcomes, has successfully treated over 50 patients in the past year.  Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon, Prof. Kingsley Ekwueme, emphasized the procedure's effectiveness, stating, "It is cheaper than robotic surgery but delivers equally successful results."

Alongside these medical advancements, public awareness campaigns are gaining momentum. The National Association of Seadogs (NAS) partnered with the Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board in April 2015 to conduct an awareness campaign and PSA screening exercise, aiming to educate men about prostate cancer and provide free screening services. This combination of advanced treatment options and increased public awareness efforts demonstrates a strong commitment to fighting prostate cancer in Lagos.”
