The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, citing gross misconduct, insubordination, and violations of parliamentary rules.

The suspension, announced during an emergency session, followed a report by the ethics and privileges committee recommending disciplinary action to maintain order in the legislative chamber. The Senate leadership stated that Akpoti-Uduaghan repeatedly disrupted proceedings, refused to comply with seating arrangements, and made disrespectful remarks toward the Senate President.

The suspension has sparked controversy, with Akpoti-Uduaghan and her supporters alleging that it was politically motivated to silence opposition voices.  She has criticized the Senate’s decision, calling it an attack on democracy and vowing to challenge the action in court.

Legal experts and political analysts are divided over the Senate's decision. Some believe the Senate acted within its rights to enforce parliamentary discipline, while others warn that such actions could lead to abuse of power and suppression of dissenting views.

The controversy has further deepened political tensions within the National Assembly, with calls for Senate leadership to reconsider its stance. The suspension raises broader concerns about the state of Nigeria’s democracy and legislative independence.
